Academic Leadership at Two Very Different Universities:
Their Approaches to STEM Education and Research
Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.
Maggiano’s Little Italy, 5333 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington, DC 20015-2050
The MIT Club of Washington cordially invites you to an exciting evening with a talk by Dr. Steven Lerman on his views on education and research based on his academic experience at MIT as an educator and at the George Washington University (GW) as Provost.
Dr. Lerman has had the privilege to be on the faculty and serve in senior administrative roles at both MIT and GW. The two universities have distinctly different missions and cultures, and these have in turn led them to choose very different internal processes, priorities and actions in many areas, including how they approach education and research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Dr. Lerman will discuss some of the commonalities and contrasts between these universities and how their comparative advantages, long-term strategies, shared governance, decision-making processes, and choices differ in ways that make sense for each.
He will also explore the extent to which his own education centered in engineering and science at MIT and his early years as a faculty member prepared him for the challenges of academic leadership.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Steven Lerman became provost of the George Washington University in July 2010. Since he arrived at GW, Dr. Lerman has overseen a number of major initiatives. These include the reorganization of the university’s three schools that formerly constituted the Medical Center, detailed planning for Science and Engineering Hall, and expanded research opportunities for undergraduates. A firm advocate of global education, Dr. Lerman is developing GW's academic presence in China and elsewhere.
Dr. Lerman joined the George Washington University from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served as Vice Chancellor and Dean for graduate education. He began his academic career at MIT as a student, earning a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in '72 and '73, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Transportation Systems Analysis in '75. Dr. Lerman joined the MIT faculty in 1975 as assistant professor and rose through the ranks, twice serving as chair of the faculty. His awards and honors include the Advisor of the Year Award from the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students, the Maseeh Teaching Award for best Departmental Teacher, and the Class of 1922 Distinguished Professorship at MIT. At the George Washington University, Dr. Lerman holds the A. James Clark Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
