First Run Features and the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University are proud to present Thomas Allen Harris' award-winning film that probes the recesses of American history in images that have been suppressed, forgotten, and lost.

This epic tale moves poetically between the present and the past, through contemporary photographers and artists whose images and stories seek to reconcile legacies of pride and shame while giving voice to images long suppressed, forgotten, and hidden from sight.

Inspired by Deborah Willis' book and exhibit, Reflections in Black, and featuring the works of Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Anthony Barboza, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco, Clarissa Sligh, and many others, Through a Lens Darkly introduces viewers to a diverse yet focused community of storytellers who transform singular experiences into a communal journey of discovery – and a call to action.
