Volunteer for the Capital Area Food Bank with the Harvard Club
CAFB Garden Building / Ages 12 and up
Address: 4900 Puerto Rico Ave
Washington, DC
The Capital Area Food Bank's Urban Demonstration Garden will be a hands-on learning laboratory for food growing education. We will use the space to promote and create demand for healthy food among low income individuals. It will allow us to show how food growing stretches food budgets and increases access to nutritious produce. We are excited to use this space to equip the community that we serve with the skills and knowledge necessary to grow their own food.
Volunteers will play a crucial role in building and growing the garden. This project will include a wide variety of tasks associated with creating the infrastructure of the garden like digging, building, painting, planting and getting your hands dirty. This is a great opportunity for individuals and groups interested in volunteering outside and in helping to bring the food bank garden to life! We accept volunteers ages 12 and up for this project and require that all volunteers under the age o f 18 to be accompanied by an adult. Youth volunteer groups must have at least 1 adult for every 10 youth that attend. For more information about this opportunity, please email healthyeatinginfo@capitalareafoodbank.org with Garden Volunteer in the subject line.
The Capital Area Food Bank has beehives on the site of our Urban Demonstration Garden. The bees are crucial to the success of our food growing capacity building program because they greatly increase the yield of our garden and play an important role in the creation of a thriving ecosystem. The hives live in the most Northwest corner of the garden and will not be in the way of main activities that will take place there. However, since there are always bees in any garden, volunteers who are allergic to bees should not volunteer in the Urban Demonstration Garden.

Additional information
Thank you for volunteering to help build the Capital Area Food Bank's Urban Demonstration Garden! We will be working outside with soil, so wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Please bring a water bottle and snacks; we want to make sure everyone stays hydrated and has the energy needed to feel most successful helping out. And don't forget sunscreen and a hat! When you pull into the CAFB Volunteer Parking Lot, you will see the garden straight in front of you. Please plan to meet by the blue tent.
