Chagas Disease: A Growing Problem for the Poor and the Not-So-Poor
Once a disease affecting only the poor in rural areas, Chagas disease is now becoming a threat to a broader population, including the U.S. What are we doing to help the 10 million Latin-Americans suffering from this neglected vector-borne disease? What is the role of "Kissing bugs" in Chagas disease, and why they have such an "innocuous" name? How has this poorly known disease come to play a role in blood donation screening today? This presentation will give a broad overview of Chagas disease, touching on its history, epidemiology, global burden, symptoms, diagnostic tools, treatments and methods of control. The increasing relevance to the United States will also be discussed. With little international attention paid to Chagas disease, the picture is bleak for the millions who suffer from this disease and for the millions more living at risk of contracting it.
