New Dominion Chorale presents “Carmina Burana" w/conductor Thomas Beveridge '59

The 200-voice New Dominion Chorale will begin its twenty-second season with “Carmina Burana and Choral Dances” on Sunday, October 28, at 4 pm at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center on the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College,  3001 North Beauregard St. in Alexandria, Virginia.

Artistic Director Thomas Beveridge '59 will conduct the concert that features pianists Thomas Pandolfi and Jeffrey Chappell and vocal soloists Danielle Talamantes, soprano; Luke Frels, tenor; and Neil Ewachiw, baritone. Also performing in Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” will be the National Men’s Chorus, the Select Ladies Ensemble of Fairfax High School and, the George Mason University Percussion Ensemble.

Mr. Pandolfi and Mr. Chappell will perform dance music written for two pianos: Anton Arensky’s “Waltz” from his Suite for Two Pianos and Sergei Rachmaninov’s “Waltz” from his Second Suite for Two Pianos. Mr. Pandolfi, who is the pianist for New Dominion Chorale, has performed throughout the United States and has toured extensively in China and Europe.

Ms. Talamantes will perform two operatic arias based on dance: “Gavotte” from Jules Massenet’s Manon and “Musetta’s Waltz” from Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme. Ms. Talamantes, a resident of Northern Virginia, has won many prestigious awards in the United States and in Paris, Berlin, and Seoul. She is under contract with the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City.

New Dominion Chorale will also perform the “Waltz” from Gounod’s Faust and the “Polovetsian Dances” from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin. This music is familiar to American audiences: the melodies were used in the musical Kismet.

New Dominion Chorale is unique in the word of choral music: It is a non-auditioned singers’ cooperative operating without paid management or offices. The Chorale performs regularly at Schlesinger Concert Hall and has also appeared at the Washington National Cathedral, the George Mason Center for the Arts and the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Thomas Beveridge, the Chorale’s Founder and Artistic Director, is one of Washington’s most versatile musicians: singer, instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger, and conductor. He is the composer of over 600 original compositions and arrangements, the most renowned of which is his Yizkor Requiem, which received its premiere by New Dominion Chorale in 1994 and has since had over twenty performances in the United States and Europe and been recorded by Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields.

Tickets for “Carmina Burana and Choral Dances” are available online through www.newdominion.org and at the door. Prices are $30 (general admission), $25 for seniors, and $5 for students and children.

New Dominion Chorale is supported in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
