Title A Millennium of Prehistory
New Discoveries at the Ness of Brodgar
in the "Heart of Neolithic Orkney" World Heritage Site
Summary: For nine years, Nick Card has supervised the excavation of a remarkable neolithic ceremonial site in Orkney, Scotland. Pre-dating both Newgrange and Stonehenge, the Ness of Brodgar has recently overturned the timeline of prehistoric developments in the British Isles 5,000 years ago. This fascinating period witnessed the transition in Western Europe between hunting-and-gathering and agricultural societies. Our modern concepts of religion, social organization, architecture, the sacred and the profane are rooted in this epoch. Nick's presentation will include a thought-provoking review of discoveries to date and the many questions they are prompting. In the stunning, elemental landscape of Orkney, journey back 5,000 years to a unique temple precinct which set a precedent for a millennium of regional development.
