Curator Ann Marie Moeller '77 will offer us a lunch time tour of Japanese E-gasuri Textiles
Curator Ann Marie Moeller will give a special tour of the folk art exhibit ”Communication through Abstractions: Japanese E-gasuri Textiles” at noon on Tuesday, October 9 at the new J.I.C.C., Embassy of Japan. E-gasuri (picture ikat) is a fabric produced by a complex process where the threads to be woven are wrapped at predetermined places to resist coloring in a dye vat. Pictures emerge as these threads are woven on the loom.
The exhibit explores how certain e-gasuri artisans communicated wishes for the most precious life accomplishments with creative, abstract images that were nonetheless readily recognized by their customers.
These handmade vintage textiles, filled with symbolism, are increasingly difficult to find in Japan and are rarely on display in the U.S.
