2012 Public Service Award Luncheon Honoring Al Kamen

This is the Harvard Club's flagship event of the year - if you can join us for one event in 2012, please join us on November 1st.

Please join The Harvard Club of Washington on Thursday, November 1st, as we present the 2012 HCW Public Service Award to Al Kamen. Our luncheon at The University Club (1135 16th Street NW) will take place from noon until 2pm.

The Harvard Club of Washington, D.C. first awarded its Public Service Award in 2000 in memory of the late Elliot L. Richardson, ’40, L.L.B. ’47, L.L.D. ’72, someone who exemplified public service. The award is presented annually to an individual who has attended or been affiliated with Harvard University and who has made significant contributions to the public good, and whose service has at least in part been focused on the Washington, D.C. area.

While current or former elected officials have been among those considered as potential recipients of the Public Service Award, the “public good” is not limited to government service.  The Harvard Club has awarded the Public Service Award to individuals whose contributions are in areas as diverse as social entrepreneurism, the arts, and journalism.

Over the years, recipients of the Public Service Award have included James R. Schlesinger, Earl A. “Rusty” Powell III, Alice Rivlin, Benjamin Bradlee, The Honorable Anthony A. Williams, Senator Paul Sarbanes, William T. Coleman, Jr., Bill Drayton, and Donald Graham.

Al Kamen, an award-winning columnist on the national staff of The Washington Post, created the “In the Loop” column in 1993. He began his reporting career at the Rocky Mountain News and joined The Post in 1980. He has covered local and federal courts, the Supreme Court and the State Department. Kamen assisted Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein in writing “The Final Days” and Woodward and Scott Armstrong in writing “The Brethren.” Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he graduated from McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio and Harvard College.
