Join us for an evening of exploration as we discuss and watch groundbreaking video from the world of the Hurricane Hunters, the elite Air Force squadron that flies into the eyes of hurricanes in order to secure the last elusive bits of data that allow forecasters to pinpoint where the storm will go, and how strong it will be when it gets there. Director-Producer Christian D'Andrea '94 created the new "Hurricane Hunters" TV series airing this summer on the Weather Channel, and the show just recently posted ratings that earned it the mantle of "biggest hit series" on the network. Having flown with the Hurricane Hunters into all of the major hurricanes of the 2011 hurricane season -- including a mission into the eye of Irene as it passed over the Statue of Liberty -- D'Andrea has an intimate understanding of what it is these adventurous pilots do, how they do it, and what makes them the world's most extreme meteorologists. He'll also talk about what it's like to be inside the eye of a hurricane, at 10,000 feet, and why punching through the fabled and violent "eyewall" is the most dangerous part of the journey, where it feels like the plane is going to come apart on you. He'll share clips of the ride into the eye and some never-before-seen footage of some of the "firsts" he experienced while directing -- moments that were so unique, even the Hurricane Hunters had never experienced them before. For weather buffs and thrill-seekers, this event is a must. It's also a must for folks looking forward to enjoying a cyclone-themed evening of hurricane cocktails and other storm-appropriate fare. Christian has been a lit agent at ICM, a VP Production for Bender and Tarantino at Miramax, a Creative Director on projects for Fortune 500s, Executive Producer/Creator on shows like HALO FREEFALL WARRIORS for Discovery, and writer of screenplays like SHERLOCK HOMEBOY, which was bought by Universal. He is currently Director / Executive Producer / Creator of the new series “Hurricane Hunters” for The Weather Channel, and Professor of Documentary Film in West Virginia. With his brothers, he’s co-creator of Soldier Fuel™, the performance nutrition bar used by Navy SEALs.
