His Excellency Harold Forsyth Mejia is one of the most experienced and accomplished of Peru’s diplomats. He has previously served as ambassador to China, Columbia and Italy (and as representative to the FAO), after having served in various capacities in the Peruvian embassies in Chile, Bulgaria,Venezuela, Canada and Germany. He has had a successful media career as a journalist, author (notably of the book, Conversations with Javier Pérez de Cuéllar), and director and host of radio and television programs. He was an elected member of Peru’s legislature (Congreso Nacional del Perú) from 1995 to 2000 and was awarded the Order of Merit for Distinguished Services in 2005.
The Author: Mark Adams is the author of Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time, which records his experience in retracing the steps of Hiram Bingham (on whom the character Indiana Jones was modeled), the first professional archeologist to find Machu Picchu a hundred years ago. Mark’s extreme trekking involved some of the most varied and challenging terrain and weather conditions in the world, sometimes using the ancient cobbled footpaths of the Incas that once stretched 2000 miles along the Andes. The book deals with the sights, sounds and culture of today, relevant history of the Inca Empire, and the Spanish conquest and colonial period, and also reviews the personality, career and attainments of Bingham who was a particularly controversial Yale University Professor. The Washington Post named a previous book of Mr. Adams, Mr. America, as a Best Book of 2009, and he has written for a number of publications including GQ, Outside and The New York Times. His wife is Peruvian.
The Presentation: Mark’s presentation will show some remarkable vistas, and provide an occasion for us to re-visit some beautiful, unspoiled and rugged terrain with him.
The Exhibit: The art exhibit at the Peruvian Embassy is entitled “Temple of Peruvian Muses”; it features abstract and surrealist works of four Peruvian painters with bright colors in stunning curves and angles that are intended to capture the essence of contemporary Peruvian women.
