Description:

The color green plays a particularly important role in the nature oriented culture of Japan.  From the green used to identify kabuki actors to the green of an obi signaling a geisha in training, this color has communicated information about the wearer for centuries.  Camellias, ferns, bamboo, pine trees and many other plants were considered to be favored by the forces of nature because they remain green throughout the year.  These motifs continue to be auspicious symbols on modern kimono.

In conjunction with the exhibition “Green: the Color and the Cause” the ancient Japanese practice of recycling old fabrics into works of art will also be explored by scholar Ann Marie Moeller as she draws connections between the Japanese reverence for nature and the use of green in the nation’s textile arts.
