IN PERSON: Lunch & Learn - Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures & Sweet Home Café at the NMAAHC

Join the HCW for a visit to the new Afrofuturism exhibit at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture!

Date: Sunday, April 16th, 2023, 11:30am- 2:00pm ET
Location: National Museum of African American History and Culture, 1400 Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC 20560

Join the Harvard Club at the National Museum of African American History and Culture for their current special exhibit, Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures. A cultural aesthetic, a philosophy of science, and a history that explores the intersection of the African diaspora culture with science and technology, Afrofuturism embraces the past and the present while imagining a thriving future. Spanning music, literature, visual arts, film, poetry, comics, sculpture, and other creative genres, the exhibit will include artifacts including costumes of stage and screen, manuscript copies and first editions of seminal novels, and musical instruments and recordings.

After exploring the exhibit, we'll head downstairs to the Sweet Home Café, a James Beard Award-nominated restaurant with four distinct stations, each telling the story of the regional offerings of classic Black cuisine. Here, you can choose whatever suits your appetite and your budget, whether that's a cup of coffee or a fish po' boy, and chat with the other attendees.

After lunch, you may continue to explore the rest of the museum on your own if you choose.

Meet-up location: We'll meet just inside the Mall side entrance of the museum, at 11:30am. Please give the name "The Harvard Club" to the staff at the Group Entrance podium (at the Southeast corner of the museum), and go through security. Julia will be in the large open area between the security checkpoint and the information desk.

Lunch: We'll walk down to the Sweet Home Café at 1:30pm.
