IN PERSON: The First Ladies' Dresses Exhibit & Piccolina de Centrolina
Celebrate Women's History month with an in-depth tour of the FLOTUS dresses exhibition from historical costumer Julia Cain, followed by lunch at Piccolina da Centrolina, the casual lunch cafe from award-winning chef and restauranteur Amy Brandwein.
When: Sunday, March 12th, 2023, 11:30am ET
Where: The Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History
The First Ladies exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute's American History Museum is not merely a display of dresses worn by some of the most well-known women in politics, it is an example of myriad roles taken on by women in our society. From the dressmakers and designers (nameless for generations, now often propelled to superstardom when chosen) to the establishment and development of the collection itself, the exhibition is indelibly marked with the fingerprints of the women involved.
Join HCW Executive Director Julia Cain '11, a historical costumer and folklorist, as she delves into the technical details of the dresses, the symbolism of their designs, and the history of the creation of the exhibit. Then walk together to Piccolina da Centrolina, the "little sister" of the award-winning Centrolina, to enjoy panini, pizza, or scacce from Amy Brandwein, the (four-time!) James Beard "Best Chef in America" nominee.
Meet-up location: We'll meet just inside the Constitution Street entrance to the museum (near the Dave's Dream low-rider) at 11:30am.
Lunch: We'll leave the museum at 1pm. The plan is to walk the eight blocks to Piccolina, but attendees may choose to take an Uber/Lyft/taxi/bus/etc.
Fees:
Exhibit: FREE!
Lunch: Entrée prices range from $11-20, menu here.
Covid-related Safety Requirements: If you have recently tested positive or have symptoms, please do not attend this event. The Club encourages everyone to be vaccinated and boosted, and to wear masks indoors when not eating or drinking, especially when social distance cannot be maintained.
