IN PERSON: Lunch & Learn at the National Museum of African American History & Culture & Sweet Home Café
Celebrate Black History Month with the Harvard Club's monthly museum excursion.
When: Saturday, February 11th, 2023, 11:30am-2:30pm ET
Where: National Museum of African American History and Culture, 1400 Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC 20560
Join the Harvard Club at the National Museum of African American History and Culture to take in some of the most impactful artifacts of the history of Black America. Whether it's the stunning I Go To Prepare A Place For You quilt depicting Harriet Tubman (pictured, left), or ten shards of stained glass collected from the funeral held for the four little girls killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama (pictured, right), the museum contains a huge assortment of both contemporary ephemera and artistic interpretation. Time will be provided for individual and group exploration, plus a 12:30pm talk with a museum docent to explore the paradox of the American Revolution as a fight for liberty in an era of widespread slavery, and the tension between slavery and freedom—who belongs and who is excluded. We will consider how this paradox resonates through the nation’s history and spurs the American people to wrestle constantly with building “a more perfect Union.”
Around 1:30pm, we'll head downstairs to the Sweet Home Café, a James Beard Award-nominated restaurant with four distinct stations, each telling the story of the regional offerings of classic Black cuisine. Here, you can choose whatever suits your appetite and your budget, whether that's a cup of coffee or a fish po' boy, and chat with the other attendees.
Meet-up location: We'll meet just inside the entrance to the museum, at 1400 Constitution Ave, at 11:30am, for our 11:45 timed tickets.
Lunch: We'll meet at the Sweet Home Café at 1:30pm.
