Despite a legacy of slavery and racial diversity, race was not a salient cleavage of politics in Latin America before the twenty-first century. How parties managed to keep race off the agenda of politics, why demands for racial inclusion and justice have suddenly become so salient, and how race has impacted politics are key questions for the study of Latin American politics today that expert panelists will address.
