Support Survivors of Domestic Violence IN Honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Please join the Harvard Community in gathering cell phones, batteries and chargers for survivors of domestic violence.

The Harvard Club is partnering with the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence (DCCADV) in order to collect and distribute cell phones, cell phone batteries and chargers to clients in need, and commemorate Purple Thursday, an annual day of awareness that celebrates the strength and ampifies the voices of survivors and advocates.

The most dangerous point in an abusive relationship is leaving it, and the likelihood of violent assault may increase substantially during this time. Access to emergency services can be critical to a victim in transition. Even a cell phone without an active service plan can be used to call 911, meaning that help for these clients need never be far away. Please consider checking your home for any old cell phones, batteries, or chargers as they can serve a much greater purpose to people in need.

DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence distributes working phones to clients through their partner agencies at the Domestic Violence Intake Center at DC Superior Court and the Domestic Violence Intake Center Southeast Satellite Office at Greater Southeast Community Hospital. Any phones that don’t work are shipped to an environmentally friendly recycling company, which in turn gives them money that goes directly back into their programs. The DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence is a group of domestic violence programs, organizations, and individuals organized to ensure the elimination of domestic violence in the District of Columbia. They are a resource for the thousands of adults and children experiencing domestic violence in the District each year and leverage their expertise to expand community activism, deepen community awareness surrounding poverty caused by domestic violence, and address systems gaps by promoting sound and effective public policy initiatives.
