As the first decade of the 21st century came to a close, the world’s largest and most lucrative business-plan competition was held . . . not in the United States or in any western country, but in communist China. Broadcast on national TV, over 120,000 entrepreneurs competed for prize money in excess of $5 million with the winner receiving nearly $1.5 million to invest in their new business plan. Win in China, the latest work by documentary film producer Bob Compton, MBA 1984, tells the story of the televised business plan competition that displayed a critically important and aggressive Chinese policy of promoting a more entrepreneurial business culture, even as the show itself was every bit as engaging as a season of The Apprentice. After a screening of the film, Bob—whose career includes stints as a successful venture capitalist and COO of a major U.S. corporation—will share further observations and insights about a startup economy that may rival  that of the U.S. sooner than anyone expected, and he’ll offer lessons to be learned for startups in the U.S. or for any business facing Chinese competitors.  See the trailer at
Win In China: China's Entrepreneurial Explosion.

As an HBS Club member himself, Bob has kindly offered to provide attendees with their choice of a DVD copy of Win in China, or a signed copy of his book Blogging Through India with his observations and compelling photographs from another culturally rich, rapidly developing, increasingly competitive Asian country with a billion-plus population (see a summary of Blogging Through India).
