When Harvard Was College Football's Number One (Really!)
A Dinner Conversation with Dick Friedman AB '73, football writer for Harvard Magazine
Tuesday, October 16th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm (Hogan Lovells)
It's kickoff time! With Harvard's 2018 gridiron season at its midpoint, please join us to revisit the first golden age of Crimson football. (The second is...right now!) You'll see how between 1908 and 1916, Harvard's blueblood roughnecks under iconic coach Percy D. Haughton (A.B. 1899) ruled the sport, compiling a record of 71 wins, five ties and only seven losses while thrice being named national champions. Plus you'll revisit the controversies over recruiting, big money, concussions, violence and overemphasis--all of which resound a century later.
Dick Friedman AB '73 is a contributing editor at Harvard Magazine, where since 2014 he has been reporting on Crimson football. A career-long journalist, he was a writer and editor at Sports Illustrated from 1994 through 2012. Friedman is the author of the recently published "The Coach Who Strangled the Bulldog: How Harvard's Percy Haughton Beat Yale and Reinvented Football" (Rowman & Littlefield). He first attended a game at Harvard Stadium in 1958.
