GEORGE S. HARRIS (Ph.D. Harvard University) will discuss the establishment of diplomatic relations between the new Republic of Turkey and the U.S., relations which were broken by the Ottoman government towards the end of World War I, but never by the U.S.

After almost 40 years of government service, Harris retired in 1995 as Director of the Office of Analysis for Near East and South Asia in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research of the U.S.Department of State.  He also served as a Professorial Lecturer on Turkey and the Middle East at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), The Johns Hopkins University, from 1968 to 1981.  In addition, he was a Research Fellow at Bilkent University and a Professorial Lecturer at the George Washington University.  Among his publications are Troubled Alliance: Turkish-American Problems in Historical Perspective, 1945-1971; Turkey Coping with Crisis; and The Communists and the Kadro Movement: Shaping Ideology in Ataturk’s Turkey.
