IN PERSON: Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience & Fava Pot

Join us to explore the National Geographic Museum's current exhibition, celebrating 100 years since the discovery of the tomb. Then, share lunch at Fava Pot, an Egyptian restaurant nearby.

When: Saturday, January 21st, 2023, 11:30am-2:30pm

Where: The National Geographic Museum, 1145 17th St NW, and Fava Pot, 1817 M St NW, Washington, DC 20036

The 1922 discovery of the nearly-intact tomb of King Tutankhamun generated worldwide interest, bringing new life to the interest in Egyptology that had simmered throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While the excavation agreement between the then-partially independent Egyptian government and the financiers behind the dig required that all the items be entrusted to the Egyptian Museums in Cairo and Luxor, photographs and some illicitly smuggled items made clear how impressive the artifacts were. When the Egyptian government sent a selection of items on worldwide tour in the early 1960s, huge crowds came to see the artifacts, many in dazzling solid gold, that were buried with the young king over three thousand years before.

Now, with the new Grand Egyptian Museum opening later this year, the final tour of King Tut's artifacts has closed. Going forward, the only place to see them will be at the museum, just outside Cairo. Fortunately, the photographic and technological advances since the original tour have allowed the creation of an immersive virtual experience that allows visitors to not only see the artifacts, but to virtually descend into the actual tomb. We are glad to be able to offer our members a discounted rate of admission. The experience takes about an hour.

Following the museum, we will walk three blocks to Fava Pot, the Egyptian-owned street food restaurant that operates one of Food Network’s “America’s 26 Best Food Trucks." Whether you share a dish of hummus with a friend, or dig into a bowl of koshary, there's something for everyone at this family-friendly, casual restaurant.

Meet-up location: We'll meet just inside the entrance to the museum, on 17th St NW, at 11:30am, for our 11:45 timed tickets.

Lunch: We'll meet at the museum exit at 1pm, for our walk over to Fava Pot. Here, you can choose the lunch that's right for your appetite and your wallet.
