garland_resized_2SOLD OUT!/2018 Public Service Award Dinner Honoring Chief Justice Merrick Garland AB '74, JD '77

Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at the University Club of Washington, DC

The Harvard Club of Washington, DC is honored to award Chief Judge Garland with its 2018 Public Service Award.

The Harvard Club of Washington, DC established the Public Service Award in memory of the late Elliot L. Richardson, AB ’40, LLB ’47, LLD ’72, the former U.S. Attorney General whose life exemplified public service.  As the Club's highest honor, this award is presented annually to an individual who attended or has been affiliated with Harvard University and who has made significant contributions to the public good. The honoree has traditionally also been someone connected to the Washington area.  Past recipients of the award have included former DC Chief of Police Cathy Lanier, former Washington Post Company Chairman Donald E. Graham, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Judge Garland has devoted his life to the country as a public servant in meaningful ways over decades. He is Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a court he has served on since 1997.  Garland served as a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice, during which time he led the investigation and prosecution of the Oklahoma City federal building bomber, and supervised the “Unabomber” bombing case.  In March 2016, President Barack Obama nominated Garland to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

In his personal life, Garland has been a dedicated citizen, of both the Washington, DC area and to Harvard University. Garland has made significant contributions to Harvard College and Harvard Law School, including serving as an active member and leader of the University Board of Overseers and teaching antitrust law and serving as a judge for moot court finals at Harvard Law School.  Locally, he has tutored DC public school students for the past 20 years. Garland is known to be a dedicated mentor to his clerks.

Garland holds an AB, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Harvard College, and a JD, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
