Astronomy, Oceanography, and Precision Timekeeping

Join us on an exciting tour to the US Naval Observatory on Monday, May 8, 2017 from 8:00 pm to 10:30 pm for FREE!  This tour is limited to Harvard Club members and their guests.

The tour will include a presentation of the Mission and History of the Naval Observatory, a description of USNO's timekeeping responsibilities with a presentation on the history of precision timekeeping, and (weather permitting) viewing of celestial objects through the historic 1895-vintage 12-inch Alvan Clark refractor telescope with an astronomer.  USNO serves as the official source of time for the U.S. Department of Defense and a standard of time for the entire United States.

Considerable walking on hilly ground in darkness during the tour--please consider this important safety precaution before registering. Members are urged to wear shoes with more treads to prevent slipping/fall. Many of the buildings do not have easy access for wheelchairs, strollers, etc.

Only up to 20 spaces are allowed per group.  The current tour date of May 8, 2017 is confirmed and we have been notified that we must arrive at 8:00 pm.  We must provide the names and dates-of-birth of all individuals in the group to the USNO.
