Open Questions Series

Our speaker will be Richard Rubenstein (Harvard AB 1959, Oxford Rhodes Scholar 1961, Harvard JD 1963).
An acclaimed scholar of history, law and religion, Richard Rubenstein is University Professor of Conflict Resolution and Public Affairs at George Mason University. He is a faculty member and former director of the School of Conflict Analysis and Resolution, the nation’s oldest and largest graduate program in conflict studies.  Professor Rubenstein is the author of eight books, the most recent of which is REASONS TO KILL: WHY AMERICANS CHOOSE WAR (Bloomsbury Press, 2010). His topic for the evening lecture-and-discussion is as follows:

AN AMERICAN DILEMMA: CONFLICT RESOLUTION OR EMPIRE BUILDING?

"Reflecting the views of most Americans, the Obama administration has attempted to avoid major military interventions in conflict zones like the Middle East. Yet our government remains committed to maintaining US hegemony on a global scale by all means necessary, including the use of violence. How to escape this contradiction and create a more peaceful future for ourselves and the world? The principles and practices of conflict resolution point the way forward."

This will be a fascinating opportunity to explore our national attitudes with a deeply thoughtful and challenging scholar.
