Black History Bus Tour of Washington, DC

Led by Don Folden, former DC mayoral candidate and licensed tour guide.

When: Sunday, August 5, 2018, 2:00pm - 6:00pm

Where: We will begin and end the tour at Krispy Kreme (1350 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington DC 20036). The closest metro station is Dupont Circle (take the south exit).

As part of the tour, you’ll learn the history of and travel through Barry Farms, the first African American contraband camp in Southeast DC. It is where the first African American to work for the Smithsonian, Solomon Brown, lived. You’ll also see the first African American school on Capitol Hill, learn about the contraband camp at Duff’s Green Row (currently the site of the Library of Congress), learn the history of Israel Bethel AME (currently the site of the Rayburn House Office building), learn how the front door of the White House is aligned with the North Star, see historical Black Churches, and also visit a Historical Cemetery in Georgetown where runaway slaves hid on the Underground Railroad. We will show you the sites of the Snow Riots of 1835, The Pearl Affair of 1848, the MLK Memorial, the legendary Howard Theater, and we’ll drive through Howard University and along the U Street corridor. You’ll learn about people like Phillip Reid, Henry McNeal Turner, Benjamin Banneker, Rev. Patrick F. Healy, and Alfred Pope, just to name a few.

The tour is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours long, with one restroom stop at the MLK Memorial (approximately 90 minutes into the tour). We do not recommend this tour for small children. We suggest comfortable shoes. Water will be provided. You are allowed to bring snacks only.
