dumbarton-oaks-garden-entrance"Early  Bird" Tour of the Gardens at  Dumbarton Oaks - FREE

Led by Jonathan Kavalier, Director of Gardens and Grounds

About the Gardens at Dumbarton Oaks:

In 1920, after a long and careful search, Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss found their ideal country house and garden within Washington, DC. They purchased a fifty-three-acre property, described as an old-fashioned house standing in rather neglected grounds, at the highest point of Georgetown. Within a year, the Blisses hired landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand to design the gardens. Working in happy and close collaboration for almost thirty years, Mildred Bliss and Beatrix Farrand planned every garden detail, each terrace, bench, urn, and border. The upper sixteen acres were transferred to Harvard University in 1940 to establish a research institute for Byzantine studies, Pre-Columbian studies, and studies in the history of gardens and landscape architecture.

About Jonathan Kavalier:

He has been working in the field of horticulture for close to 20 years. He begin as a private garden designer and nursery manager, and then had the incredible opportunity to live in Madagascar for 2 years and run a design & build landscaping company there. When he returned he joined the staff at Smithsonian Gardens, first as the tropical plant curator and then as one of the managers responsible for about half of the gardens at the Smithsonian. For the last 3 years he has been working at the Architect of the Capitol as a strategic planning and change management consultant. Now, he is thrilled to lead the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks, attempting to fill the very big shoes left by his predecessor, Gail Griffin, when she retired this spring after 21 years.
