/Global Trends in Smart Cities: A Panel Discussion

Smart cities have become a compelling topic, both in the U.S. and abroad. Over half the world’s population lives in urban areas--a figure that will increase to about two-thirds of the world’s population by 2050. Today, 3.9 billion people are living in cities, and that number will continue to rise exponentially. In the U.S., 81% of its 320 million people live in urban areas or suburbs. Globally, Tokyo, Japan is the world’s most populous city, with 38 million people, followed by Delhi, India with 25 million.
Given the dramatic rise in the world’s urban population, how will we create clean, sustainable cities, with fresh food, access to recreation, health care and transportation systems that reduce the need for cars? What kinds of technologies and innovations will be needed to create a sense of community in these new urban landscapes?
We will bring together an expert panel from industry, government and think tanks to address these important issues:
Moderator: Limor Schafman – Director, Smart Buildings Program, Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) – Washington, DC
Limor has international expertise as an entrepreneur, innovator, blogger, speaker and moderator. Currently, she’s working with communications and connectivity members of the TIA developing its Smart Buildings Program. TIA and its members are doing integral work in the field of Smart Communities. This includes developing market understanding, frameworks, specifications and standards that enable commercial and residential real property to use communications infrastructure for integration with municipal infrastructure. Limor is also former President of the World Future Society DC, and the IPv6 Forum Israel Chapter.
Panelist: Carlos Cubillos – Principal, Design Director, Planning & Urban Design Practice Area Leader, Gensler
Carlos brings an expertise in architecture, urban design and master planning, with a focus on mixed use projects. A Gensler Principal and Design Director, Carlos has participated in projects in numerous international locations, including Russia, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, Dubai, China, Malaysia and Singapore. His experience includes site planning, residential projects, resorts, office and institutional buildings.
Panelist: Chris Greer – Director of the Smart Grid and Cyber-Physical Systems Program Office and National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Chris is charged with promoting the emergence of a globally interoperable Internet of Things and coordinating the development of a framework for smart grid interoperability. Prior to joining NIST, Chris served as Assistant Director for Information Technology R&D in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and Cybersecurity Liaison to the National Security Staff. He will discuss federal government initiatives regarding smart cities.
Panelist: Pedro Ortiz – Multilateral and Government Consultant (UN, IDB, WB, ADB, UN-Habitat).
Author “The Art of Shaping the Metropolis” (McGraw-Hill, New York, 2014). Metropolitan management and planning specialist. Relevant figure on Metropolitan Discipline (Lecturing at MIT, Milano Polytechnic, NYU, Guadalajara). Former Senior Urban Specialist at the World Bank and Visiting Professor at Milano Polytechnic. Twenty-nine years of metropolitan management experience in twenty-six countries. Founder and Director of Urban Planning MSc. at King Juan Carlos University (Madrid). Director General for Regional Planning and Urbanism for Madrid Regional Government. Deputy Mayor for Madrid for Strategic Planning. Made Madrid’s Strategic Plan (1988-94) and Madrid’s Metropolitan Plan (1996-2016).
Panelist: George Thomas – Global Director, Smart Infrastructure, Hatch, Ltd.
George is a thought leader and adviser to public and private sector organizations in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, providing expertise to companies and governments on Public Sector Analytics and Smart Cities. He previously served as Global Director of Strategy & Markets for IBM’s Government Industry vertical. From 2013 to 2014, he was the Director of Smarter Cities for IBM Greater China, based in Beijing, PRC; and from 2010 to 2012, he was the Global Director for Smarter Cities Sales Strategy & Execution.
