Consulting curator, Ann Marie Moeller ’77, will lecture on the meanings of Heian Period (794-1185) images of the imperial Japanese court on modern kimono , the labor intensive techniques used to make these exquisite garments and the unique insights into Japanese culture that can be gleaned from the exhibit kimono and obi.
Exhibit description:
This jewel box of an exhibit is housed in the Jean and Allen Berman Textile Gallery. Japanese kimono and obi dating from the late 19th c. through the 21st c. are showcased. All are handmade and decorated with symbols of the Heian Period (794-1185), an artistic golden age of the Japanese imperial court.
