Mark Plotkin is an ethnobotanist and conservationist who has focused on the plants and peoples of the Amazon since the late 1970's.  A former student of the renowned ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes, Mark is perhaps best known for his bestselling book, Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice and through the Academy Award-nominated IMAX film "Amazon."  In November 2005, he was profiled in Smithsonian's 35th anniversary magazine as one of "35 who made a difference" during that span.  

Dr. Plotkin is President of the Amazon Conservation Team, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the biological and cultural diversity of the tropical rain forest, which he co-founded in 1996.  He previously served as a Vice President of Conservation International and as Director of Plant Conservation at the World Wildlife Fund – US.  Before that, he worked as a Research Associate in Ethnobotanical Conservation at the Botanical Museum of Harvard University. He received his education at Harvard, Yale and Tufts universities.
