Tour of the Smithsonian Gardens with Horticulturist James Gagliardi

Our guide is a master horticulturist and editor of the Smithsonian's first gardening book. Limited to members and their guests.

Tour of Smithsonian Gardens with horticulturist James Gagliardi. The tour will meet at the south tower of the Smithsonian Castle and take a quick stroll through the Enid A. Haupt Garden before continuing on to the Urban Bird Habitat and the Butterfly Garden at the National Museum of Natural History.

We will gather at 9:30am at the south tower to the castle. The castle is the only building open before 10am so this allows for a slight jump on the crowds and access to a café and restrooms.

$5.00 for members and their guests/$10. for non-members.

Net proceeds will be donated to the fund for the maintenance of the Enid Haupt Gardens at the Smithsonian. 

 


The tour will take about 1-1.5 hours and travel about .75 miles.  

 


James Gagliardi grew up gardening at his family’s 1780’s colonial home in Berlin, Connecticut. He studied horticulture at the University of Connecticut and went on to earn a master’s degree from the Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture at the University of Delaware. James previously served as the horticulturist for River Farm, the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society in Alexandria, Virginia. He is currently a horticulturist with Smithsonian Gardens in Washington, D.C. He is responsible for the landscape surrounding the National Museum of Natural History, including the Butterfly Habitat Garden and the Urban Bird Habitat. He is honored to be the editor of the Smithsonian’s first gardening book, Encyclopedia of Garden Plants for Every Location. http://www.gardens.si.edu/book/
