Understanding Contemporary Art Jewelry with Ellen Reiben, Director of the Jewelers'Werk Galerie
This event will introduce us to the fascinating world of superb and exquisite modern jewelry handcrafted by American and International artists.
Jewelers’Werk Galerie is an exhibition space dedicated to showing international contemporary jewelry by international artists. Ellen Reiben has been the director for 31 years and is considered a veteran in this field. The gallery has about 8 exhibitions per year and also houses a collection of jewelry in many media and in many styles from about 75 artists. The jewelry, shown in drawers and on the walls and showcases, is both precious and non-precious and in a wide range of viewpoint and price. From avant-garde to more classical, there is something for anyone smitten with contemporary jewelry that makes a statement.
All proceeds will benefit the Harvard Club's Community Service projects.
Biography of Ellen Reiben
Ellen Reiben earned an MFA in metalsmithing and jewelry from RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen). A jewelry artist for many years, Ellen took over the Galerie, founded by Dutch jeweler Joke Van Ommen, following Ms. Van Ommen death in a car accident in 1988 at the request of the Van Ommen family. With an encyclopedic knowledge of the field, Ellen will offer us an overview of the last 30 years of art jewelry including material and current trends in the field and give us an insider's view of this esoteric field. Considered a leader in the field of experimental and avant-garde jewelry fabrication, Ellen has done a lot of experimental work with epoxy resins, using machining and innovative hand work and the mixture of plastic and more traditional materials.
